A White-throated Kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis) perched within the trees of Wilderness Orchard. This medium-sized kingfisher is distinguished by its chestnut-brown head and underparts, bright turquoise-blue wings and back, and a prominent white throat and breast patch. The species also possesses a large red bill adapted for capturing a variety of prey. Despite its name, the White-throated Kingfisher is commonly found far from water and inhabits orchards, agricultural land, gardens, wetlands, and urban areas. It feeds on insects, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, and other invertebrates.
