Video Description
As Chinese electric vehicles arrive in Canadian ports, a debate surrounding security has reopened. The first batch of almost 50,000 vehicles arrived in Canada last month, and will be sold at a reduced tariff rate in exchange for lowered levies on Canadian canola and other products, all part of a trade deal Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney struck with China earlier this year. However, the federal government’s own public safety department appears to have reservations. A memo obtained by the Canadian Press warns opening the auto market could “amplify the presence of high-risk vendors,” saying, “connected vehicles collect significant amounts of data on Canadians, which can have intelligence value.” The memo also warns that under China’s national security laws, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) could compel manufacturers to hand over data. As Touria Izri reports, U.S. senators are taking part in a bipartisan effort to strengthen the crackdown on Chinese EVs, which could lead to Canadians who drive them being turned away at the border.
