Canada to mandate 21-day isolation period for those from Ebola-impacted regions

The Canadian government will require travellers from Ebola-affected regions to self-isolate for 21 days effective as of Wednesday. In addition, immigration authorities are temporarily suspending applications from Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Uganda. Health Minister Majorie Michel said in a press conference Tuesday afternoon that despite the self-isolation requirement, the health risk to Canadians “remains low.” “We are putting forward a precautionary approach to ensure the safety and security of Canadians,” she said. Asked how Canada is justifying these restrictions after the World Health Organization warned against them – suggesting they are fueled by fear and not rooted in science – Michel, and Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab said the decision was made in alignment with the U.S. and Mexico, as all three countries begin hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup games next month.
