Haunting footage captures Maldives cave before fatal dive disaster

The footage shows divers using flashlights to navigate a dark tunnel system deep below the surface. The cave, located in Vaavu Atoll, stretches nearly 30 metres underwater. It contains multiple chambers connected by narrow passages and dead-end tunnels. Five Italian divers entered the cave on May 14 and never resurfaced. Their bodies were later discovered inside and around the submerged cavern. The victims included marine researchers, a university professor and a dive instructor. One diver was found near the entrance to the final chamber. A sixth person also died during the recovery mission. Maldivian military diver Sergeant Major Mohamed Mahudhee suffered fatal decompression sickness while searching the cave. Experts say the group used standard oxygen tanks not designed for dives at depths of around 50 metres. Investigators are now examining why the experienced divers attempted the cave dive without specialist equipment. The footage was recorded years before the tragedy but now offers a haunting look inside the deadly cave system.
