Video Description
Original Video Credit: @LynolsOffice One twist of the key lowers the rear glass into the tailgate, unlocking the next step of the mechanism. Instead of swinging outward like a normal wagon, the entire gate slides smoothly down beneath the cargo floor. General Motors called it the “Glide Away” or “Clamshell” tailgate system, used on large 1970s station wagons like the Pontiac Grand Safari. The design gave families a massive unobstructed cargo opening for loading furniture, camping gear, or groceries. To close it, the tailgate is pulled back upward into position and the rear window is raised back into place. Even decades later, it still feels like something designed far ahead of its time.
