Located in central Europe, in the west of the country, the city lies on the banks of the Vltava River (German: Moldau). Historical capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and cradle of the Czech people, Prague reached its peak in the 14th century, under the reign of King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, who made it the capital of the empire. Prague, the "magical capital of Europe", as André Breton wrote, has the power to transport visitors to a romantic atmosphere. It is a city full of magic, not only because of the famous wave of alchemists in the 16th century, but especially because of the cultures that have intertwined within its walls, including the Jewish community in the Josefov district, located in the heart of the old town. With the Vltava winding through royal, imperial and later modernized buildings, Prague has built its image as the “mother of cities”, accumulating impressive layers of unique architectural and artistic heritage. The music of Mozart, Dvořák and Smetana echoes through the streets of Prague, accompanying every step. The cafes, witnesses to the heated debates between artists and intellectuals, preserve the memory of a vibrant past, confiscated by more powerful neighbors. The shadow of the Golem hovers over the walls of the Jewish quarter and its cemetery at night, and the silhouette of Kafka still haunts the steps to Prague Castle. Fortunately, the disturbing ghosts of Stalinism have left the corridors of the presidential palace. The Old Town Hall, founded in 1338, was the center of the city’s administration. The oldest part of the complex includes the southern wing, with an impressive Gothic tower, a chapel with stained glass windows and a unique astronomical clock – Orloj, where, every hour between 9:00 and 23:00, the twelve apostles appear. The eastern wing in Gothic style was destroyed during the Prague Uprising on May 8, 1945 and was never rebuilt. Prague is a city full of history, with attractions such as the Castle and the Old Town Square, but also places that tell stories at every corner, such as the Jewish Cemetery or the Charles Bridge.
