Video Description
A recent legal case from Madhya Pradesh has gone massively viral across Indian social media after the Madhya Pradesh High Court awarded ₹10 lakh compensation to a businessman who spent 57 days in jail because packets of garam masala and aamchur powder in his luggage were mistakenly flagged as suspicious illegal substances at an airport security check. The case shocked many people online because the man reportedly lost nearly two months of freedom over ordinary kitchen spices. According to court records and news reports, the incident happened at Bhopal airport when the businessman was travelling to Delhi before an international trip to Malaysia. During routine baggage screening, an Trace Detector machine allegedly detected traces associated with prohibited chemical compounds in packets containing branded garam masala and dry mango powder. Security officials then treated the materials as possible illegal substances, leading to the businessman’s arrest and imprisonment. But later it turned out to be just normal kitchen power! The most controversial part of the case was not just the mistaken detection itself, but the massive delay in proper forensic testing. Reports said regional forensic laboratories lacked the equipment needed to quickly verify the suspicious materials. Because of these delays, the businessman remained in jail for 57 days until samples were finally sent to a central forensic laboratory in Hyderabad, which confirmed that the packets contained only ordinary spice products and no prohibited substances. The High Court strongly criticized the state’s forensic infrastructure and said the businessman’s constitutional right to liberty had been violated because of administrative failures and outdated systems. Justice Deepak Khot observed that while authorities may initially act cautiously during airport security checks, innocent people should not suffer prolonged imprisonment due to weak forensic capabilities and bureaucratic delays. The court ordered the Madhya Pradesh government to pay ₹10 lakh compensation and also directed inspections and modernization of forensic laboratories across the state. Subscribe to FactTechz
