Video Description
At the CANSEC defence conference in Ottawa on Wednesday, Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed the federal government is entering into contract negotiations with Saab to buy a fleet of surveillance aircraft for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Saab will produce the planes in a joint partnership with Bombardier, based off of the Global 6500 business jet. Carney says the RCAF needs these jets to monitor new threats such as hypersonic missiles. This after Canadian defence policy experts said Tuesday, during a House of Commons defence committee, that the federal government's military spending commitments have yet to see meaningful follow-through and lack a coherent goal. The criticisms echo comments made last week by a senior U.S. Defense Department official after the Pentagon paused a decades-old joint military advisory board with Canada, which was accused of not being a "credible" partner. Carney, however, touted stepped-up levels of defence spending Wednesday, saying in his prepared remarks that the federal government now aims to spend the equivalent of four per cent of GDP on defence by 2030.
