Gold and silver in free fall. Which ball is faster? A little physics experiment. Did you guess correctly or did you know because you are very good at physics? Why do the gold and silver spheres land at the same time? Even though gold (≈ 19.3 g/cm³) is almost twice as dense as silver (≈ 10.5 g/cm³)—so the gold sphere is much heavier than the equally‑sized silver sphere—both touch down together as long as air resistance is negligible (for example, in a vacuum or from a modest drop height). • Gravitational force Every sphere feels F_G = m * g The heavier gold sphere experiences a larger force simply because its mass m is larger. • Newton’s 2nd law (F = m * a) Acceleration is a = F_G / m Substituting F_G = m * g gives a = (m * g) / m = g Result: Both spheres accelerate at the same rate g ≈ 9.81 m/s², regardless of mass or material. • Air resistance in real life In normal air, each sphere meets the same drag because shape, size, and speed match. That drag matters per kilogram a bit more for the lighter silver sphere, but from typical heights the difference is so small you’d need a high‑speed camera to spot it. In a vacuum the drag disappears entirely—think of the Apollo 15 hammer‑and‑feather demo.
