tailstock chuck build
Video Description
This is where it all comes together. Part 3 is the final stage of the heavy duty tailstock chuck build for the Megabore lathe. After the fabrication and precision machining, it’s now time for drilling, assembly, and seeing how everything comes together. The bolt holes are drilled and chamfered using the PCD function on the milling machine to suit the 3 jaw chuck, followed by drilling and tapping for the 4 jaw. From there, we move into assembly… and that’s where things don’t quite go to plan. What should be a straightforward bearing install turns into a fight. Even with everything measuring correctly, the bearings refuse to cooperate. We try thermal expansion using the parts washer… but in the end, the hydraulic press has the final say. With the bearings and snap rings installed, the 3 jaw chuck is mounted and the full setup is test fitted onto the tailstock of the Megabore lathe. The build has really come together, but we’re not done yet. To swap over the to 4 jaw, the rear profile of the chuck is machined to suit the backing plate before it can be mounted. Once that’s done, it’s bolted into place to complete the tailstock chuck assembly. The design of this build allows both 3 jaw and 4 jaw capability in one heavy duty, shop made tool. The completed revolving tailstock chuck is now fitted to the Megabore lathe, bringing the full build together and one step closer to making chips.
