Video Description
Ottawa will host the 2026 Wheelchair Basketball World Championships from September 9 to 19, welcoming 28 teams from around the world in what city officials are calling a landmark moment for inclusive sport in Canada. CTV's Camille Wilson profiles players Tyler Miller and Lee Melymick, both members of Team Canada, alongside Sabrina Di Maso of the Ottawa Carleton Wheelchair Sports Association, who began playing wheelchair basketball in 2022 after she was no longer able to play able-bodied sport. Ottawa mayor Mark Sutcliffe proclaimed May 29th Accessibility Day in Ottawa during the 23rd annual Accessibility Day event, while Megan Richards, program manager at the Accessibility Office for the City of Ottawa, said the occasion gives the city a chance to showcase itself as a leader in accessibility. Councillor Marty Carr, liaison to the Accessibility Advisory Committee, and Di Maso both emphasized that adaptive sports open doors for athletes across a wide range of disabilities, from cerebral palsy and spinal cord injuries to amputations.
