Driving across Umling La Pass and remote deserts of Ladakh

The journey traverses Umling La Pass, one of the world's highest motorable roads, situated at an elevation of approximately 5,798 metres (19,024 feet) above sea level. Vehicles travel through extremely high-altitude terrain characterised by freezing temperatures, thin air, snow-covered sections of road, and panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain ranges. Colourful Buddhist prayer flags line parts of the route, marking significant points along the pass. The drive then descends into Ladakh’s vast cold desert landscape, where unpaved gravel roads wind through barren valleys and rugged mountain formations. A newly constructed concrete bridge crosses a dry riverbed, reflecting ongoing infrastructure development by the Border Roads Organisation in this remote frontier region.
