17.. what is that in "creator" years, like 119? Seventeen years ago today (Nov 5, 2008) I clicked "publish" on my first RC video. Now, in 2025 and 2100+ videos later, - I’m a lot older, a lot greyer, but Im still reaching for tiny hex drivers like it’s day one, (and mostly for my seeing-glasses) still finding it amusing that I still dont have every tool I need. This hobby has a magic to it, I have always enjoyed it thoroughly. These days.. there is no end to the different RC kits and builds you can attempt! So, let's do an old school build. I cant sit as long as I used to - but I gotta scratch the build-itch! It’s in my blood. #RCiN4LiFE
For this anniversary, I wanted something hands-on and easy to follow. So here’s the flow: I unbox the Double E Hobby 1/14 all-aluminum flatbed trailer, i lay it out for you to see the parts - and then I assemble it and test it behind the FMX Volvo—driving with a steering wheel and pedal combo because, yes, turning the "studio" into a mini truck stop is still fun.
The trailer looks beautiful in person—nice machining, proper presence. My kit had a couple quirks worth mentioning as I go: four tiny screws were missing (easy to replace), the “adjustment” area on the rear ramps felt more decorative than functional, and the big one—the landing legs weren’t quite tall enough for my semi tractor to back under and pin up cleanly.
The site says it fits perfectly; on my setup, the legs just needed more height. My quick fix was simple: I stuck felt feet under the trailer, gained the clearance, and the hookup worked great. If you’ve got a smarter solution or different ride height, drop it in the comments so we can help the next builder. Im thinking Rubber Feet.
For anyone curious about the basics, this is a 1/14 scale, all-aluminum flatbed rated for 15 kg, built for scale hauling and meant to look the part doing it. It pairs nicely with the Volvo, and once the leg height was sorted, it towed like a champ in the yard test.
A shoutout to Wave-RC for sending this over for the day. If you want to check it out, head to https://www.Wave-RC.com
and use code RCSparks for 8% off sitewide. I’m not sponsored and I don’t get a commission—it’s just a break for you if you decide to pick something up.
Seventeen years of RC ADVENTURES later, I’m still here building, driving, fixing, and laughing when a tiny part hits the floor and vanishes into another dimension. Thanks for sticking around. If you’ve watched since the early days or you’re brand new, you’re part of this story now.
If this helped, toss it a like, share it with a fellow RC nerd, and tell me what you’d do differently on the landing legs—or what you’re building next.
