Video Description
A mother and child reunite. Alma and her child immigrated to the U.S. from Honduras, the journey separating the family at its end and leaving both parties devastated for years after. Twenty years later, the child has grown up as Cristina, affirming their gender as female, marrying and starting a successful career. But through it all, Cristina has never stopped trying to find Alma. Twenty years later, Alma has been found, and now Cristina has the opportunity to unite with her mother. She longs to see her parent, but she wonders if her mother will embrace her as she is now -- or will she have to hide her true self? Directed by Melissa Fisher and written by Melissa Fisher and Mair Flores, this powerful, emotionally lucid short drama is at heart a family narrative of separation, heartache and reunion, complicated by geopolitical headwinds. Alma and her child were forcibly separated when they immigrated from Honduras decades ago. That child has grown and evolved in the time since, successfully making a life and a new gender identity for themselves. But when a reunion presents itself as a possibility, Cristina's deepest longing comes into conflict with her deepest fear: that the mother she wants so desperately to see again will not accept her as she is. Textured, gritty yet poetic in visual detail, the storytelling is less focused on hot-button topics than it is on exploring the emotional wreckage in their wake, paring down dialogue and letting its lived-in details speak for themselves. We meet both Cristina and her mother Alma in the present day, both carrying the ache of missing one another. Alma works at a laundry, gently asking any young man where they came from; Cristina's present-day life features her job as a medical professional, her loving, supportive husband, and a lovely home. But through it all, the flashes of their past migration haunt them, leaving both with a profound sadness. But when her lawyer finally locates her mother, Cristina is joyful and then apprehensive, uncertain if her mother will accept all the changes in her life and identity. Actors Carolina Gutierrez and Neher Jacqueline Briceno offer poignant, aching performances as Cristina and Alma, respectively, both capturing the weight of a persistent heartache that underlies the quiet, busy surfaces of their everyday life. Gutierrez also conveys the anxiety and uncertainty that come from not meeting her mother's expectations, particularly as a transgender individual. These considerations could be difficult obstacles, and we feel the stakes of them with Gutierrez's finely honed performance. But when Alma and her long-lost child finally meet, BUSCANDO ALMA focuses on the essential heart of the characters: the pure love between a parent and a beloved child, finally reunited after many years apart. That undertow of ache finally finds relief and release. That emotion is essentially the key takeaway of the narrative: the deep recognition that every human being has a heart that yearns for connection, warmth and acceptance, and the essential love between children and parents, enduring beyond time and distance. All else falls away in these moments, and the only thing that remains is the warmth of love and the tenderness of being cherished. BUSCANDO ALMA.
