Giant Honey Bee colony hanging from a tree in Munnar

A massive open-air colony of Giant Honey Bees (Apis dorsata), also known as Rock Bees, suspended from a tree branch in Munnar in southern India. The bees have constructed a single large exposed comb, a characteristic nesting behavior of this species across tropical South and Southeast Asia. Thousands of worker bees form a dense outer “bee curtain” covering the hive surface, helping regulate temperature and defend the colony against predators. Giant Honey Bees are known for their remarkable collective defensive behavior called shimmering, where waves of coordinated movement ripple across the colony to deter threats.
