Video Description
A lathe this big needs a serious revolving tailstock chuck, and there’s nothing off the shelf that comes close. So we’re building one from scratch. Before getting too far into it, we take a look at the chucks we will be using. Both a 3 jaw and 4 jaw are unpacked and inspected to see what if they’re going to work with the build. Early on, the 4 jaw raises a few concerns. The overall quality isn’t what we expected, and the back mounting face won’t work either so we decide to order a different 4 jaw chuck. With that worked out, the focus shifts to getting the main body underway. A large 1045 hollow bar is set up in the lathe, with the OD rough turned before moving onto boring the ID. Material is intentionally left for final machining, as the welding process will pull the part out of shape. Once that stage is complete, a weld prep is machined and the hollow bar is set up onto a 410mm round plate. The main body is then welded using flux core wire on the welding rotator, ready for final machining in the next stage. This is just Part 1 of the build. The main body is underway, but with the 4 jaw chuck not up to scratch, we now have to wait for the new one to arrive before we can continue.
