John Field: Complete Nocturnes
John Field’s nocturnes are among the most elegant and intimate works of early Romantic piano music. Born in Dublin in 1782, Field studied in London with Muzio Clementi and later spent much of his career in Russia, where he became a respected pianist and teacher; he is widely regarded as the inventor of the piano nocturne, a lyrical, small‑scale character piece whose name evokes the introspective atmosphere of the night. He composed them mainly between 1812 and the mid‑1830s, usually in a gentle ternary form: a cantabile main section, a slightly more active middle, and a return of the opening theme, often subtly varied.
The nocturnes are built on a singing melody in the right hand supported by soft, arpeggiated accompaniment in the left, creating a flowing, almost vocal line that feels like a quiet evening serenade at the piano. This style had a direct influence on Chopin, who later expanded the form into one of the central genres of Romantic piano writing, but Field’s versions remain simpler, more restrained, and closer to the world of salon music. Unlike his more virtuosic concertos and other public works, Field’s nocturnes stand out for their reflective, inward‑looking expression, offering a fascinating window into the origins of a whole Romantic tradition built around the piano and the evocative power of the night.
