Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently concluded a high-profile visit to Italy where he held extensive talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome. The visit attracted global attention not only because of the growing strategic partnership between India and Italy, but also because of the viral “Melodi” social media trend built around the friendly chemistry between the two leaders.
The biggest outcome of the trip was the decision by both countries to officially upgrade India-Italy relations to a “Special Strategic Partnership.” This marks one of the most significant diplomatic upgrades in recent years between India and a major European nation. The two leaders discussed cooperation across defence, trade, technology, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, clean energy, maritime connectivity, and higher education.
A major focus of the visit was defence cooperation. India and Italy launched a new defence industrial roadmap aimed at co-developing and co-producing defence technologies and military platforms. Both sides also discussed strengthening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and enhancing maritime security links between Europe and Asia.
Another important aspect of the meeting was the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a large international trade and connectivity project connecting India with Europe through the Middle East. Both leaders strongly backed the initiative and described it as a transformative geopolitical and economic corridor that could reshape global trade routes.
The visit also became hugely popular online because of the continuing “Melodi” phenomenon — a nickname created by combining Modi and Meloni. A selfie and informal interactions between the two leaders went viral across social media platforms, generating millions of views globally. One particularly talked-about moment was when Modi gifted Meloni “Melody” chocolates, creating a playful reference to the “Melodi” meme.
During the joint press conference, Modi described Rome and Varanasi as “eternal cities” connected through deep civilizational heritage. Meloni, meanwhile, said India-Italy relations had entered a “decisive phase” built on democracy, trust, and shared global interests. The leaders also planted a tree together in Rome as a symbolic gesture of long-term friendship between the two nations.
Analysts view the trip as strategically important because Italy is increasingly becoming one of India’s key European partners in sectors like defence manufacturing, energy transition, advanced technology, and global supply-chain diversification. The visit also reflects India’s broader effort to deepen ties with European countries amid changing geopolitical alignments worldwide.
