Government made a sharp increase of ₹993 in LPG cylinder prices, but it is important to understand that this hike applies only to commercial LPG cylinders (19 kg) and not to household cylinders. The revision was announced by oil marketing companies and came into effect from May 1, 2026, making it one of the biggest single price jumps in recent times.
After this increase, the price of a 19-kg commercial cylinder has crossed ₹3,000 in major cities—for example, about ₹3,071 in Delhi and around ₹3,024 in Mumbai. This is the third consecutive hike in recent months, showing a continuous upward trend in fuel costs. However, the domestic LPG cylinder (14.2 kg) used in homes remains unchanged, so ordinary households have not been directly affected by this specific hike.
The main reason behind this sudden increase is linked to global energy price pressures and geopolitical tensions, particularly in West Asia, which have affected crude oil and gas supply chains. Because LPG prices in India are partly influenced by international markets, such global disruptions quickly reflect in domestic commercial fuel rates.
The biggest impact of this hike is being seen on restaurants, hotels, street food vendors, and small businesses, which rely heavily on commercial LPG. Many reports show that eateries are already increasing food prices, cutting menu items, or reducing operations to cope with rising costs. In some places, food prices have increased by up to 20%, and small vendors are among the worst affected.
There are also broader economic effects. Hostels, canteens, and catering services are raising rents or reducing food portions due to higher cooking costs, showing how the price hike is indirectly affecting everyday consumers. At the same time, political reactions have emerged, with opposition leaders criticizing the government and calling for a rollback, arguing that it adds to inflationary pressure.
In summary, the ₹993 increase is a major commercial LPG price hike, not a household gas price increase. While it does not directly raise cooking gas costs for families, it is expected to increase the cost of eating out, services, and small business operations, which can indirectly impact the general public.
