Video Description
We’re starting the rebuild of a universal head for our Zayer milling machine – and it’s not looking pretty! This head was salvaged off a scrapped Zayer mill, and we had no idea what condition it was in. After a bit of a battle, we finally separate the two halves and immediately spot trouble. There’s murky, oily grease, rust on the gears, and even a broken lock washer. We push on with the teardown, stripping gears from the first half before moving onto the other side, eventually removing the main spindle and all the internals. Before any real rebuilding can start, the gears need a serious clean-up. A quick wire wheel session on the bench grinder reveals the bad news – chipped teeth and rust that’s eaten into the hardened layer. For now, the rebuild is on hold while we figure out if we can source replacements or get new ones made. If you enjoy heavy machinery repairs, machining projects and workshop problem-solving, you’ll want to see what we found inside this universal head!
