Inside Indonesia’s Most Protected Park with Rangers | Ujung Kulon

Inside Ujung Kulon National Park with local rangers, patrolling the sea, and witnessing life in one of Indonesia’s last wild places. This episode continues my Sabang to Merauke journey, now entering the Java series. Riding into Banten, I make my way to Ujung Kulon — a remote and protected national park on the western tip of Java. Here, I meet Pak Mul, a local ranger who has spent over 15 years protecting these waters. Together, we head out on patrol — navigating rough seas while learning about the ongoing threats in the park, from poaching of the critically endangered Javan rhinoceros to illegal fishing practices like blast fishing. As we make our way to Pecang Island, the journey is far from easy. But what awaits is one of the most untouched and biodiverse places in Indonesia — home to monkeys, hornbills, deer, and dense coastal jungle. We also spend time with local fishermen, visiting traditional bagang platforms at night to understand their way of life and how they work with the sea. Back on the mainland, we follow the full journey of the catch — from ocean to local markets.
