Video Description
We’ve got a severely damaged bucket cylinder rod from a 120 Tonne Komatsu mining excavator in the shop — the piston is seized solid and the threads are in rough shape. Instead of scrapping it, we’re seeing if it can be salvaged! First step is getting it set up in the lathe, changing to our 4 jaw chuck and getting everything dialled in straight. Once we’ve got the steady rest supporting it, we start machining the piston off — but hit some hard spots from heat damage that chew through inserts fast. Once we’re through the tough stuff, we reveal the threaded area — and thankfully, it's not a total loss. Then it’s time for the tricky part… chasing the threads on the lathe with precision and some serious coordination. With the threads cleaned up and the damaged piston finally remove we finish it off using our shop-made tool post grinder to linish the rod and bring back the surface finish. This job was a real test of precision and patience but a good result when everything comes together. In this video we're using our @Machineryhouse1930 Hafco TM-26120G Lathe.
