A recent social media controversy involving Virat Kohli took another dramatic turn after German influencer and singer LizLaz claimed that she was allegedly offered money to publicly criticize and defame Kohli following a viral Instagram incident. The controversy began when Kohli’s Instagram account appeared to “like” one of LizLaz’s older posts, triggering massive online discussion because Kohli does not follow her account. Screenshots quickly spread across Indian social media, turning the incident into a meme trend and sparking intense speculation among fans.
According to LizLaz, after the story exploded online, several people — including individuals she described as journalists — allegedly approached her with offers of money to make false allegations against Kohli or publicly speak negatively about him. In an interview clip that later went viral, she said:
“Some journalists even offered me money to say bad things about him and make allegations about things he never did.”
However, she refused those offers and defended Kohli strongly. LizLaz stated that Kohli “did nothing wrong” and said she would never damage someone’s reputation for money or publicity. She also described Kohli as one of her favorite cricketers and even compared his level of fame in Asia to football superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The situation attracted huge attention partly because it revived memories of an earlier social media controversy involving Kohli and actress Avneet Kaur, where Kohli had previously blamed Instagram’s “algorithm” for accidental interactions while clearing his feed. This time too, social media users jokingly revived the “algorithm” meme, turning the incident into a mixture of celebrity gossip, cricket fandom, and internet humor.
At the same time, the incident highlighted the enormous influence and scrutiny surrounding Kohli, especially during the IPL season. Even a minor social media interaction from one of India’s biggest sports stars was enough to generate international headlines, memes, interview offers, and online conspiracy theories within hours. The fact that a foreign influencer became part of India’s cricket-media ecosystem almost overnight showed how intensely Indian celebrity culture now overlaps with global social media culture.
