The wide, open desert stretched out, dotted with scrubby bushes and bathed in the warm glow of the afternoon sun. Three fluffy black chicks were playing near the edge of the railway line, their chirps light and joyful. But then, a soft, distressed peep caught their attention.
Their friend, a sweet yellow chick, had wandered too close to the tracks and tripped, his little leg caught under a loose stone right beside the shining metal. He was crying, small, mournful sounds echoing in the vast quiet.
"Oh no!" gasped Daisy, her black feathers fluffing up with worry. "He's hurt!"
"We have to get him off the tracks!" chirped Poppy, already trying to peck at the stone, though it was too big for her.
Lily, the smallest but also the most optimistic, looked around. "Maybe we can make a ramp! Like when we climb up the big rock!" She pointed to a few fallen leaves and some small, flat pebbles.
Working together, with cheerful chirps and determined little pushes, they gathered the leaves and pebbles, carefully arranging them into a tiny ramp leading away from the track. The yellow chick, seeing their efforts, tried to hop, his little eyes watching them hopefully.
Suddenly, a long, mournful sound echoed from far down the tracks – the sound of a train whistle. It was still very far away, just a tiny speck on the horizon, but it was coming. The black chicks redoubled their efforts, their tiny beaks pushing the last few pebbles into place, their hearts filled with a mix of urgency and innocent determination to save their friend.
