The three men killed in a shooting at San Diego’s largest mosque on Monday have been identified by the city’s police department.
Islamic Center of San Diego security guard Amin Abdullah [AKA Brian Climax], caretaker Mansour “Abulezz” Kaziha, and regular attendee Nader Awad were gunned down by two armed 17- and 18-year-old suspects in the afternoon.
At a Tuesday press conference, San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl revealed Abdullah can be seen in surveillance footage reaching for his radio and issuing a lockdown protocol before engaging in a “gun battle” with the suspects – who were later found dead with self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
“His [Abdullah’s] actions without a doubt delayed, distracted, and ultimately deterred these two individuals from gaining access to the greater areas of the mosque where as many as 140 kids were within 15 feet of these suspects,” Chief Wahl told reporters. “Tragically, he died in that gun battle,” he added.
The institute’s director, Imam Taha Hassane called the three victims “our martyrs and our heroes,” while San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria commended them for their “heroism” and “selflessness.”
