Dateline Philippines: UP Department of Political Science Prof. Aries Arugay on Tuesday (June 2) criticized the ongoing turmoil in the Senate after majority senators failed to show up for Monday’s session, leaving the minority bloc waiting in the session hall.
Arugay also described Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano’s challenge for the minority to boycott Senate proceedings as “gaslighting,” which seemed to imply that the independence of the Senate now falls under the responsibility of the minority.
"Is he talking about Malacanang, the Ombudsman, for whom the Senate should be independent? Because if you ask me, they cannot be totally independent, because what power they have is borrowed from the voters, from the electorate," he said.
"If they will continue to behave as what they see fit, then it's really a violation of the fiduciary trust given to them by the voters, for them to work, for them to fulfill the functions that they took an oath in fulfilling," he added.
