Heavy duty steering kingpins normally require enormous force to press into the steering knuckle because the fit is intentionally machined slightly oversized. That interference fit prevents movement and keeps the steering assembly rigid under extreme loads.
By cooling the kingpin with liquid nitrogen, the steel contracts by a tiny but critical amount. That microscopic shrinkage temporarily reduces the diameter enough for the pin to slide smoothly into the housing by hand instead of needing a hydraulic press or heavy hammering.
As the metal warms back to ambient temperature, it expands to its original dimensions and creates an incredibly tight mechanical bond inside the knuckle. This shrink fit technique is widely used in heavy equipment, aerospace, industrial machinery, and precision mechanical assembly.
