Malaysia will decide its defence spending based on its own evaluation, despite calls from the US for higher military expenditure, said Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin at the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue on Saturday (May 30).
He added that Malaysia would not be able to meet the 3.5% spending level requested by the US, citing differences in defence doctrine.
He also said he would express Malaysia’s “displeasure and disappointment” to his Norwegian counterpart after Norway unilaterally halted the delivery of naval missiles in early May.
