Why are we constantly worried about things happening far away?
It’s the news. We’re fed dramatic headlines all day, and we carry that anxiety with us. We check updates, form opinions, and start to feel like everything is falling apart.
The philosopher Schopenhauer warned that journalism tends to exaggerate.
And the Stoic Epictetus told a story about two scouts going to the same place.
One sees danger in everything that moves and returns in panic.
The other stays calm, looks at the situation carefully, and concludes there’s nothing to worry about.
Today, the news often sounds like that fearful scout. Everything that moves equals disaster and collapse.
