The Centre has extended the tenure of current CBI Director Praveen Sood by one more year, avoiding the selection of a new officer from a panel of 69 IPS officers. The decision was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, extending his term until May 24, 2027. The move comes amid political controversy after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi raised objections over the selection process, alleging lack of transparency and adequate access to evaluation reports during the committee meeting. The CBI director appointment process involves a high-level committee headed by the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition, and a Supreme Court judge nominee, which recommends candidates before final approval by the government.
