On many Japanese construction sites, workers secure scaffolding using a traditional wire binding method called Shino shibari. Instead of relying entirely on clamps or bolts, steel tie wire is wrapped tightly around the joint between the plank and support pipe.
The worker then inserts the pointed handle of a Shino tool into the wire loops and rapidly twists it to multiply tension. That twisting action creates an extremely tight mechanical grip that holds the structure firmly in place.
The technique is valued because it is fast, lightweight, and highly secure when performed correctly. Skilled scaffold workers can tighten the wire with remarkable speed while maintaining enough force to stabilize large temporary structures.
