It's tax time again. With many Australians starting to pull together their 2025-26 tax returns, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning people to stop claiming private expenses as work deductions, and to also stop under-declaring income. Some have been trying to pass off baby expenses, personal gifts and meal deliveries as 'work-related'. And many are failing to declare gifts and income on their returns. The ATO uses a suite of tools - including data matching, analytics and artificial intelligence - to understand taxpayer behaviour and identify red flags.
