Food banks across Canada are stretched thin as more Canadians are becoming increasingly reliant on their services to make ends meet. The latest report card from Food Banks Canada is bleak with all provinces scoring a “C” or a lower grade for food insecurity.
“Unemployment is trending up, food insecurity rates at crisis levels across the country are such that we need to see more momentum from a policy perspective,” Food Banks Canada CEO Kirsten Beardsley said.
Sarah Watson from North York Harvest Food Bank in Toronto says “You can’t pay less rent, you can’t pay less for transit, you can’t pay less for childcare. Food becomes the only last flexible budget line. And that’s when we see people.”
As Nathaniel Dove reports, Food Banks Canada is calling for governments of all levels to help with things such as rent assistance and overhauling employment insurance in order to relieve demand.
