China's Shipbuilders Deliver Oil Tankers at Full Speed

China's shipbuilding industry remains buoyed by strong domestic and international demand. At a shipbuilding base in northeast China's Liaoning Province four very large crude carriers or VLCCs, are ready for delivery. A company executive said their ability to deliver faster than competitors has become a decisive factor in securing orders. They owe part of that speed to a new 2,000-ton gantry crane. Data shows that the localization rate of domestically produced oil tankers exceeds 85%. Compared with other major overseas shipbuilding bases, Chinas domestic shipyards are bigger, cheaper, and more efficient. Data shows that since the beginning of this year, 17 shipowners worldwide have placed orders for new VLCCs, totaling 27.9 million deadweight tons. Among these, Chinese shipyards have received orders for 83 vessels, totaling 25.5 million deadweight tons, which is over 91 percent of the total global orders.
