Court sides with First Nations, says Alberta failed its duty to consult on separatist referendum

The Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation is among several First Nations challenging Alberta's separatist movement, arguing treaty rights must be respected before any referendum process moves forward. Two court rulings have sided with Indigenous nations, finding the province failed in its duty to consult. First Peoples Law says treaties signed with the Crown predate Alberta's creation and cannot be overridden by provincial decisions. Despite recent court setbacks, Premier Danielle Smith has vowed to appeal, while First Nations leaders say they will continue fighting to protect their rights and way of life.
