The true price of massive success is often your own freedom, and recognizing when a golden opportunity has morphed into a trap is the ultimate survival skill. When you stubbornly hold onto something that looks highly valuable on the surface, you might be blinding yourself to the fact that you are being manipulated and drained. True power isn't about endlessly acquiring more; it's about having the deep self-awareness and the courage to release whatever is keeping you stuck in a cage.
Dave Chappelle illustrates this perfectly by describing a bushman's ingenious method for finding scarce water. The bushman places a lump of salt inside a small hole, knowing a baboon will reach in to grab the bait. Because the animal clenches its fist around the salt, its hand becomes too large to pull out, effectively trapping itself through sheer stubbornness. The bushman then captures the baboon, feeds it even more salt to induce extreme thirst, and eventually releases it. The bushman knows the desperate animal will immediately run to a hidden water source, leading him right to it. Chappelle realized he was in the exact same position as that baboon with his own fame and fortune, but unlike the animal, he made the calculated choice to simply let go of the salt.
