The Government faces weeks of turmoil as embattled Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer braces for a leadership challenge from Greater Manchester’s popular mayor, Andy Burnham — who cannot formally launch his bid until he finds a route back into Parliament.
Burnham’s path to Westminster is anything but certain. He must first overcome a strong challenge from the anti-immigrant Reform UK party in a special election for a seat vacated to make way for him.
After dozens of Labour members publicly urged Starmer to step down, Health Secretary Wes Streeting on Thursday became the first Cabinet minister to resign.
While hailing Starmer’s “courage and statesmanship” in international affairs, Streeting said he had lost confidence in the prime minister’s leadership over domestic missteps.
“Where we need vision, we have a vacuum. Where we need direction, we have drift,” he wrote in a blistering resignation letter.
Weeks of speculation about Starmer’s future erupted into open rebellion on Thursday as Burnham declared his intention to go for the top job and two other senior figures positioned themselves for their own bids.
Pressure to replace Starmer has intensified after Labour’s disastrous local election results, with the party haemorrhaging votes to Reform UK on the right and the Green Party on the left.
