Water safety warning after child drowns in Rideau River

A six-year-old boy has died after drowning in the Rideau River near Mooney's Bay Beach in Ottawa, prompting renewed water safety warnings ahead of the summer season. CTV's Tyler Fleming reports that Marc Antoine Deschamps of the Ottawa Paramedic Service says bystanders pulled the child from the water and began CPR before paramedics and Ottawa firefighters continued resuscitation efforts during transport to hospital. Sean Duffy, vice-president of management training at the Lifesaving Society, says those near open water must understand the dangers of undertow and varying depths, and stresses that lifejackets and swimming lessons are critical to survival. The drowning follows a separate incident earlier this month in which a toddler drowned along the banks of the Ottawa River.
