US announces criminal charges against former Cuban president Raul Castro

Federal prosecutors announced charges against former Cuban president Raúl Castro Wednesday, as the Trump administration steps up its pressure campaign on Cuba’s socialist government. The announcement is related to Castro’s alleged role in the 1996 downing of two small planes operated by the Miami-based Cuban exile group Brothers to the Rescue. “For the first time in nearly 70 years, senior leadership of the Cuban regime has been charged in this country, in the United States of America, for acts of violence resulting in the deaths of American citizens,” acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said. “The United States government has not forgotten these innocent men who were shot out of the sky.” The indictment comes as Trump has pushed for regime change in Cuba, where Castro’s communists have been in charge since his late brother Fidel Castro led a revolution in 1959.
