Porous asphalt is designed with interconnected air gaps that allow water to pass directly through the pavement layer and into the ground below. Unlike traditional roads, the surface intentionally stays permeable instead of fully sealed.
During heavy rain, the system reduces standing water by draining runoff almost immediately after it lands. This helps lower flooding risk while also improving tire traction and reducing hydroplaning on roads and parking areas.
The clear cylinder demonstration makes the drainage process visible by showing water disappear through the pavement instead of collecting at the top. Permeable paving systems are increasingly used in urban areas to manage stormwater more naturally.
