Comelec to spend P200M on special election for Barzaga's replacement | DZMM TeleRadyo

The Commisson on Elections is set to hold special elections in Dasmarinas, Cavite following the expulsion of Cavite 4th District Rep. Kiko Barzaga from the House of Representatives. Comelec Chairman George Garcia said Barzaga's expulsion leaves a vacancy that must be filled. "Whether namatay, nagresign o ganyang natanggal, ang Comelec may hold special election," he said. He said that under the law, special elections must be held no earlier than 60 days and not more than 90 days after the vacancy. This means the special elections could held anytime between August 2 to September 2. One problem faced by the poll body is funding. Garcia said a special election would cost an estimated P200 million, since it must be held before the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections on November 2. Dasmarinas, Cavite is one of the most vote-rich districts in the province, with an estimated 437,730 voters.
