India’s coaching industry is under increasing scrutiny as regulators crack down on misleading advertisements and unfair practices. The latest case involves Physics Wallah, which was fined ₹5 lakh by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) for allegedly using a pre-selected donation option that led millions of students to unknowingly contribute extra money while purchasing courses. The watchdog termed it a ‘dark pattern’, a tactic designed to influence consumer decisions without clear consent. The action follows similar penalties against several coaching institutes accused of misleading success claims, highlighting growing concerns over transparency, ethics, and student rights in India’s competitive education sector.
