The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed, as of Tuesday, there are now only 116 suspected cases of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after hundreds were ruled out.
This comes after a WHO press conference last Friday, where officials said there were 906 suspected cases of the rare and deadly Bundibugyo strain of Ebola.
On the drastic drop over the weekend, WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier told reporters that suspected cases simply include “anybody who gets picked up by surveillance or who presents themselves at a health facility with any symptoms that could be Ebola-like.”
Among the hundreds were people “who had been malaria or meningitis cases” and therefore dropped from the WHO’s statistics.
Though only 116 cases are currently suspected, there are still 321 confirmed cases in DRC and nine in Uganda.
