How old is the earth? Around 4.6 billion years old. We know this thanks to something called geologic time, which is the entire span of the earth’s history from its formation to the present day. In this educational video, we are going to learn more about geologic time, and how it is measured! Remember how we said the earth is around 4.6 billion years old? Well, the universe is anywhere from 13.6 to 26 billion years old. So even though 4.6 billion years seems like a long time, it is actually pretty short in terms of the entire universe. Wild to think about, right? To help us understand geologic time, scientists have organized it in to units. These units are based on the rock record and significant events in the earth’s history, like geological changes and the evolution of life. These units are: eon, era, period, epoch, and age.
