Gas geysers rely on an igniter to immediately light fuel as it enters the burner chamber. When the spark system fails or becomes delayed, unburnt gas can continue flowing into the unit for several seconds instead of igniting safely.
Once the igniter finally sparks, all of the trapped gas combusts at once. That rapid ignition creates the violent burst of flame seen at startup before the burner stabilizes into a normal controlled flame pattern.
Delayed ignition is considered a serious safety issue because repeated explosions can damage internal components, crack heat exchangers, or ignite nearby materials. Gas appliances showing symptoms like loud booms, delayed lighting, or flame rollouts should be inspected immediately by a qualified technician.
