Alongside officials and fellow members of San Diego’s Muslim community, Hawaa Abdullah paid tribute to her father Amin Abdullah [AKA Brian Climax], on Tuesday, one day after he – and two other victims – were killed in a shooting at the city’s largest mosque.
Amin served as longtime security guard for the Islamic Center of San Diego. And according to San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl, he issued a lockdown protocol – and saved the lives of dozens of others – before engaging in a “gun battle” with the two teen suspects moments before his death.
“He was a best friend. He was the absolute best dad in the world,” Hawaa told reporters. “He was my protector.”
Hawaa continued, "Regardless if you were Muslim, if you are a Christian, if you are Jewish, if you had no faith, he [my father] didn't care. He would treat you [like a] human. He would smile at people he did not know. You could see happiness and just who he was as a person by just looking at his face."
Though Chief Wahl made clear that the 17 and 18-year-old suspects – who were later found dead of self-inflicted gunshot wounds – did not specifically threaten the Muslim institute before their attack, authorities are considering it a hate crime and investigating “general hate speech” from the two, which he said “covered a wide gamut.”
