#IEC60601-1-9 Environmental Conscious Design is a collateral standard for the #IEC60601 series.
The standard is not yet mandatory across the globe, but Brazil's ANVISA does.
So, why bother?
We all have responsibilities to protect our environment.
Also, according to a 2014 Harris Poll commissioned by Johnson & Johnson, more than 80 percent of hospitals around the world expect to incorporate sustainability into their purchasing decisions.
IEC 60601-1-9 was published in 2007 and amended in 2013, and again amended for publication around Q3 of 2020.
I was once a Team Leader for a #MedTech R&D company to take on the company's efforts to comply with this standard.
We evaluated where we can have a positive environmental impact from the device design through the end-of-life cycle.
Some areas we analyzed included,
*replaceable batteries,
*minimize the use of battery power by smart circuit design
*packaging waste
*reusable parts at the end-of-life
*reusable components for use in maintenance and service
*electronic instructions and so on
So, what do you need to show as evidence of compliance?
Any guesses?
