A 12-year-old boy is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, after a Toronto police officer was seriously hurt during an attempted auto theft Monday.
The incident, which Ontario’s police watchdog is now probing, unfolded around 1:30 a.m. on the Leaside Bridge, near Donlands Avenue and Millwood Road.
Special Investigations Unit (SIU) spokesperson Kristy Denette said four officers in two cars tried to stop the driver of the stolen vehicle on the bridge. “There was contact made with a police officer and that vehicle, and then there were multiple shots fired at the vehicle,” she told reporters.
Both the driver and the officer were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The officer has since been released while the driver remains in hospital.
Three people – two 12-year-olds and a 13-year-old – were in the vehicle, Denette said. Two are in custody and one is outstanding.
