Small lead shot has historically been produced by allowing molten droplets of metal to cool into near perfect spheres before being sorted by size. Different shot numbers determine the diameter and intended use of the pellets.
In this setup, freshly formed lead BBs collect beneath the casting system before being filtered and separated. The process depends on surface tension, cooling speed, and consistent droplet size to create uniform round shot.
Because molten lead and airborne lead dust are both hazardous, this type of metal casting requires proper ventilation, protective equipment, and careful handling to reduce exposure and fire risk.
