Carefully engraved by hand into the cylinder are a series of images showing different stages of a deer's running motion. Each engraving represents a single frame, requiring exceptional craftsmanship and precise spacing to create the illusion of smooth movement.
As the trigger is pulled and the cylinder rotates, the engraved frames pass by rapidly in succession. The timing of the rotation causes the individual images to blend together in the viewer's eye, creating the appearance of a deer running across the metal surface despite the artwork itself remaining completely static.
The effect is based on the same principles used in a zoetrope, one of the earliest forms of animation invented in the 1800s. By combining traditional hand engraving, mechanical motion, and persistence of vision, the artist transforms a functional component into a miniature animated work of art.
